STATEHOOD MEANS EQUALITY
For centuries, the Residents of Washington, DC, have desired to become a state of the United States of America.
The United States is the only nation in the world with a representative, democratic constitution that denies voting representation in the national legislature to citizens of the capital. In addition to paying federal taxes, District Residents pay local taxes and bear all the responsibilities associated with citizenship. There are two states (Vermont and Wyoming) that have populations that are smaller than the District of Columbia yet they have full representation in Congress and control over their own local affairs. The District’s population is also comparable to other states including Delaware, Alaska, and several others.
Statehood will give DC Residents full representation in the US Congress.
Statehood will allow DC Residents to govern themselves.
Statehood will make Washington DC equal.
DC Residents are the only Americans who pay federal taxes and have NO representation.
In 2014 DC Residents paid more in federal taxes than 22 states.
DC Residents have fought and died in every war in history - yet have no voice in those decisions.
Washington DC local government is fiscally sound with 25 consecutive balanced budgets including FY2021, with over $16 billion in local revenue.
DC's local courts, laws and even elections are subject to Congressional approval.
Statehood is the next step in DC becoming fully equal. In 1964, DC got the right to vote for President. In 1973, it gained limited local control.
On November 8, 2016 DC Residents voted "STATEHOOD YES!", sending the call for equality to Congress.
